The Phildadelphia Youth Media Collaborative and You

08 November 2013 ~ 0 Comments

A promotional video for PYMC – The Philadelphia Youth Media Collaborative – Co-Directed by Big Picture Alliance alum Gabby Loredo and YESPhilly alum Mary Simmons has hit the airwaves of Youtube! It’s a video that highlights some of the positive impacts of the many organizations involved in PYMC and the good work all of us do all over the Philadelphia area. It takes a deep look into the minds of the students enrolled in programs like BPA, YESPhilly, WHYY, Art Factory, and Lil’ Filmmakers. Special thanks to PYMC founding org PhillyCAM for lending your space and facilities during much of production. This video promotes, most importantly, how youth media programs have affected these students for the better.  There are many other great organizations involved in this project so remember to watch the end credits!

Check it out here!

BPA is one of a number of founding member organizations of PYMC. PYMC is busy building a consortium of organizations around Philadelphia committed to strengthening, connecting, and promoting organizations that engage youth in the creation, analysis, and distribution of media. PYMC’s network of youth media educators and producers supports youth in becoming creative media makers, critical thinkers, and engaged global citizens. Together, we work to advance a healthy democracy that values youth perspectives and contributions. — our hope is that by promoting our good work, foundations, key constituent groups in the city and most of all youth will gain a better understanding of the positive outcomes and impact our programs have for youth across Philadelphia.

Youth Media Programs in Philadelphia Band Together to Support Youth

10 October 2011 ~ 0 Comments

Organizations that help Philadelphia youth build self-expression and creative skills through digital media production are banding together to increase visibility of youth media programs in the city through the Philadelphia Youth Media Collaborative (PYMC).   Last week the PYMC received a $50,000 grant to continue to build a vibrant network of youth-serving media organizations with expertise in youth development, youth media, and digital and media literacy in Philadelphia.

More than 3,000 young people each year in the Philadelphia region participate in a variety of youth media programs. Today, the Collaborative is able to actively move ahead to further strengthen collaboration between program providers, to increase the quality of instructional practices and programs, amplifying positive youth voices, while making youth media a larger part of the public discourse in Philadelphia.

The PYMC was started in 2009 when representatives from local media organizations, including Big Picture Alliance, WHYY Dorrance H. Hamilton Public Media Commons, YES Philly, the Media Education Lab at Temple University,  PhillyCAM, the University Community Collaborative of Philadelphia, PhillyCAM, Scribe Video Center, Spiral Q Puppet Theater, and the Mural Arts Program started to meet regularly for information exchange and networking.

According to Gretjen Clausing, Executive Director of PhillyCAM, “The PYMC will bring more visibility and better connections between organizations, while creating a space for youth to actively engaged in media creation and distribution to talk about issues of importance to them.”
